There are just two pieces of the watch that the French premium company has ever produced. In 2016, the watch’s original retail price was $78,500. But given that just 67 pieces of each edition were produced, it makes sense why the market price has risen to $250,000.

Cartier London Crash (1967), which brought $1.5 million at auction on May 4thThe fabled Cartier Crash watch has several fictitious origin legends, ranging from catastrophic automobile collisions in the heart of London to an epiphany that struck when a severely damaged watch that was being serviced at Cartier’s London site arrived. Whatever its provenance, the Cartier Crash is shrouded in mystery, and London is generally recognized as both its spiritual and physical birthplace because of the creative collaboration of renowned designer Rupert Emmerson and Jean-Jacques Cartier, who was at the time the head of Cartier London. Given that Cartier London was the first location to make the Cartier Crash, London-signed versions of the watch are among the most sought-after pieces. Jean-Jacques made the decision to start producing their own watches in the middle of the 1960s. The Crash, created by Cartier and Emmerson in the 1960s, was inspired by the surrealist design movement of the time. Its unusual case shape, which is evocative of Salvador Dali’s melting clocks in his 1931 artwork “The Persistence of Memory,” and its twisted dial arrangement make it instantly identifiable. The idea was to create a Cartier Oval with “twisted ends” for the design. This watch, which is made of 18kt yellow gold and has a distinctive Cartier dial signed in London with black exploded Roman numerals and blue steel hands, is a stunning representation of the Crash in all of its amazing grandeur. This item, which dates from 1967, is among the first to turn up at auction. – Loupethis

Over the years, Cartier’s investigations into modern design have been presented through The Crash. The Crash has a reputation as a sought-after watch that Cartier doesn’t release very often, thanks to its debut in the 1960s and the several limited edition runs it has created since then. With its enigmatic beginnings and exceptional rarity, it has swiftly emerged as the preferred timepiece for every Cartier enthusiast to ogle. My particular favorite watch, this is a unique chance to own an extremely early first-year-of-production, brand-new-to-market original Crash, of which there were only ever a few produced. – @fumanku
