Despite arriving fashionably late, the newlyweds looked stunning.
Regarding A$AP Rocky, one thing? He will have a tantrum. The rapper often looks like a style icon, whether he’s out to lunch or celebrating his birthday, so it should come as no surprise that A$AP looked amazing when he arrived at the Met Gala on the biggest night in fashion.
Yes, he arrived long after the red carpet event ended. However, considering that Rihanna accompanied him inside the building, you have to wonder how long it would take for two well-known celebrities who are both recognized for their fashion sense to get ready if it takes one celebrity the better part of the day? It was worth the wait, but the answer is all day—like, the whole freaking day.
A$AP and RiRi adhered to their distinctive styles for the “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” theme while including key terms from Lagerfeld’s fashion lexicon. A$AP re-created a classic Karl Lagerfeld ensemble with Maison Boucheron jewelry, a red tartan kilt, a thick black belt, a white button-down, a black tie, and a flawlessly fitted jacket. A$AP, in contrast to Karl, wore the kilt over a loose-fitting pair of jeans, fusing high fashion with street style while still paying homage to Karl.
While not referencing Karl Lagerfeld’s own clothing, Rihanna did borrow a page from his book. The singer headed to the Met Gala donning a vintage Karl Lagerfeld-designed Fendi 1997 ensemble that included a voluptuous brown fur coat, sleek hair, and a hefty necklace of jewels.
But when she finally made it to the red carpet—which seemed to have been waiting for her arrival—she looked stunning in a puffy, floral white Valentino gown, accessorized with a white fabric rose cloak and eyelash-attached sunglasses.
There were undoubtedly several Chanel and Karl-esque features on display that evening, including tweed, tailoring, pearls, and black and white outfits. Few, though, dressed for the Met Gala by channeling Karl himself or pulling designs from the past, at least not as successfully as A$AP and Rihanna did. That being said, we have to announce that, despite their tardiness, they have won the Met Gala.
