Meek Mill launches new label, Dream Chasers Records, with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation
NEW YORK (AP) —Meek Mill, a former rapper from Philadelphia who is now an entrepreneur, is in a Jay-Z mode. He is collaborating with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation to start a new record label.
The two hip-hop artists celebrated Dream Chasers Records’ debut on Tuesday in the New York City offices of Roc Nation. They signed contracts during a brief press conference and celebrated with champagne.
“I had many business offers, of course, but I feel comfortable going through this right here at home because of the relationship we’ve built with Roc Nation—their belief in me through my whole career, through my ups and downs, and the morality they showed to me and my team when it wasn’t in their best interest to have shown it,” Mill said. It’s time to get to work. We are only turning a page, beginning a new chapter.
As president of Dream Chasers, Mill, 32, will be in charge of the label and its employees.
After releasing several mixtapes and creating a lot of buzz in Philadelphia, Mill broke through to the public in 2012 when he made his major-label debut and topped the charts. His songs “Going Bad” and “All Eyes on You” made it to the Top 25 of the pop charts. He has also earned two platinum albums and two gold records. He even defeated Dr. Dre, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar to win the 2016 Billboard Music Awards’ top rap album.

The ultimate hip-hop entrepreneur, Jay-Z, claimed that he and Mill clicked not just musically but also in other ways.
Jay-Z raved about Mill, praising “his integrity, his honesty, and his sense of responsibility.” “Everything he has done thus far has demonstrated that he is capable of bearing that responsibility for the coming generation. We see the bigger picture, yet anyone can sign some musicians, make some money, and boast about how best they are. It goes much beyond just having a good record and signing best artists for us.
Earlier this year, Jay-Z, Mill, and other prominent figures formed the Reform Alliance, a movement that advocates for modifications to state legislation pertaining to probation and parole. After a Pennsylvania judge sentenced Mill to two to four years in jail for minor probation violations in a ten-year-old ɢᴜɴ ᴀɴᴅ ᴅʀᴜɢ possession case, Mill became an icon for criminal justice reform supporters. Before a judge granted his freedom, he was imprisoned for several months.

“We have experienced similar situations and neighborhoods,” stated Jay-Z, who was raised in the Brooklyn Marcy Projects complex. Being among the select few who survived means that we take responsibility for it seriously. We haven’t arrived at this stage of life to simply decide to live carelessly. Not that we didn’t have a good time. It’s enjoyable as well, but we have a duty to uphold the culture as a whole.
“This time, when I came out of prison, I signed up for a bigger responsibility,” Mill continued. I’ve always believed it is my duty to steer the culture in the direction I think it should go. I often say that Jay-Z and my predecessors served as a kind of snowplow for people just like me. They made the snowstorm more manageable for walking. For the generation that follows me, I want to keep plowing snow.
Hard-working musicians hoping to make an impact—”not a social media success for the weekend or for the month”—will be signed by Mill for his new label.
In addition to kicking off his Legendary Nights Tour with Future on August 28th, the rapper will be releasing a five-episode documentary series titled “Free Meek” on Amazon Prime Video on August 9th. The series will follow Meek as he fights for his legal case to be dismissed and his work with the Reform Alliance.
Mill just revealed that he is now a co-owner of Lids, a sports gear shop, and that he would oversee the company’s creative approach in addition to launching a limited-edition hat line.
According to Jay-Z, Mill will succeed in all he attempts.
“I’m sure he can compose music. We have observed that. The music has been heard. I believe that he is a star-maker in addition to a musician. He is a talented filmmaker in addition to a star maker. He declared, “He can do anything he wants.”
Jay-Z went on, “What we lacked for so long was opportunity.” “Power like this has never belonged to us. Nobody has ever gone before us and then returned to demonstrate to us how something should be done. These are the errors that I committed. It has never existed for us. It had just never existed. Even though hip-hop has been around for forty years, we have just recently reached a position where we can truly influence changes in our music and society. stuff makes sense that we have been giving stuff out for so long—we had to start somewhere. We no longer shine shoes, but you had to scrub the floors before you owned the building.
