When Diana Prince, the movie’s self-assured heroine, reunites with Steve Trevor, Gal Gadot dons the ivory silk dress. You’ll be curious to know where this slender style originated right away, and costume designer Lindy Hemming—who has worked on movies like Casino Royale and The Dark Knight—confirms that it’s not something you can buy in stores. Hemming calls it the “goddess garment” in a GoldenGlobes.com interview:

“We looked at a ton of evening gowns, but none of the metallic styles of the time seemed appropriate for [Gal Gadot’s] persona. They appeared to be very literal. To develop that kind of timeless American vibe, I drew inspiration from Claude Montana, Calvin Klein, and Chanel. With the help of Ian Frazer Wallace, a very talented cutter, I made that outfit as a wrap-around skirt and shirt out of strong double silk crepe. In order for her legs to show through, we needed something. In any case, she had the most amazing legs, and I knew she would stroll across Washington’s Long Pond [the National Mall]. It appeared that being white would set you out from the rest of the crowd. She is somewhat of a deity, and she would appear to be one. We dubbed it the goddess look of the 1980s. Cuff from Tiffany,” Hemming recalled the momentous day.

That’s why it’s so incredibly elegant: in addition to being a top and skirt rather than a full-length garment, it was also influenced by some very recognizable design brands. Gadot looks stunning in the maxi with a black lip and taupe heels that complement the entire look.
