Arsenal defeated Liverpool 3-1 in a pivotal match for the Premier League lead, and Virgil van Dijk took credit for the team’s second goal.
The Gunners scored three times—by Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard—but the goal scored by the Brazilian in the 67th minute was the one that made headlines and supporters go crаzy.
The fans were quite upset with van Dijk and Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson for their respective lapses in concentration and handling of the ball, which allowed Arsenal’s advantage to be restored by Martinelli from 18 yards out.
However, van Dijk, captain for Liverpool, acknowledged in his post-match interview that he is responsible for that pivotal second goal.
For his part, Van Dijk admitted to Sky Sports that it had been “a tough day” and that he was fully responsible for Martinelli’s goal (2-1).
That is a pivotal point in the match. It aches for me; I ought to have chosen wisely.
It is my duty to attempt to clear the turning point. Such setbacks are obviously rare in my line of work, but I will get back up and running soon. You can’t make excuses when playing this physically demanding game. It is a divided decision at the highest level.
I will do my best to ensure that this does not happen again, but Alisson touched me lightly and was unable to clear it. I accept full responsibility for this.
Losing is painful. Our approach today was superfluous in so many ways.
“Being involved in mistakes hurts, especially seeing the fans and the entire club descend on us, but I will work hard and be back.”
When Martinelli scored, fans took to social media to point the finger at the captain and the goalie.
Roy Keane, a pundit for Sky Sports, compared Liverpool’s defensive line to a pub team and lambasted van Dijk for all three of Arsenal’s goals.
When Burnley visit Anfield on Saturday afternoon, Liverpool will have their first opportunity to make amends.
