Real Madrid score two extra-time goals to beat Atletico Madrid 5-3
In the instant classic, Kepa Arrizabalaga made a terrible error and two own goals were scored.
In an exciting Spanish Super Cup semifinal match, Real Madrid triumphed against Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid nearly lost the game due to Kepa’s terrible mistake, but Dani Carvajal’s late goal forced extra time. Los Blancos won the game in extra time thanks to a late goal from Brahim Diaz and an own goal from Stefan Savic. Antoinne Griezmann scores a spectacular goal to surpass Luis Aragones and become Atletico Madrid’s all-time top goalscorer.
On Wednesday night, Real Madrid defeated archrivals Atlético 5-3 in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final, setting up a timeless match. Stefan Savic’s own goal tricked Jan Oblak in a game that went into overtime, giving his team a thrilling victory.
The red and white team got off to the ideal start, with Mario Hermoso giving Atleti the lead after just six minutes. Both teams were hoping to go to the final and face either Barcelona or Osasuna. But Real Madrid subsequently took the lead thanks to two goals in ten minutes from Ferland Mendy and Antonio Rudiger.
Diego Simeone’s team managed to equalize thanks to a solo effort of brilliance from Antoinne Greizmann, who also made history by becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer. Los Blancos increased the pressure after that, and Jan Oblak produced many outstanding saves. But Kepa Arrizabalaga made a terrible mistake on the other end that almost cost his team the match.
As the last fifteen minutes of the match approached, it was improbable that a cross from the right would pose any threat to Carlo Ancelotti’s defense. Nevertheless, Kepa dropped the ball onto teammate Antonio Rüdiger’s head while attempting a straightforward collection. Despite his best efforts, the Spanish goalkeeper was unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line.
It appeared as though Real would pay a price for the miscalculation, as time was of the essence. Dani Carvajal, though, saved the day by hammering the ball into the upper corner to force extra time. Los Blancos took the lead there thanks to an unlucky own goal by Savic after attacker Joselu missed the ball entirely and left Oblak in no man’s land.
In an attempt to score one more goal, Atleti increased their pressure, sending the goalkeeper forward as well. This ultimately proved to be their undoing, as Brahim Diaz defeated the top-ranked Slovenian runner in a foot race before seeing an empty net from a distance. Real Madrid’s victory now sets up a tantalizing semifinal match on Sunday, January 14, against either Barcelona or Osasuna.
Griezmann was able to make history by becoming Atletico Madrid’s all-time top goalscorer, despite the outcome not going his way. After two stints since 2014, the Frenchman passed the illustrious Luis Aragones with his 174th goal for the team. He also carried it out with style.
The former World Cup winner picked up the ball from around thirty yards out, drove towards the box, and went past Rudiger and Modric—the latter of whom ended up on the deck. The attacker hit the ball over Kepa and into the far bottom corner from the edge of the box.
When the 32-year-old discovered the internet, she was obviously upset. It’s unclear if that was due to the strike’s significance in the history of the game or otherwise. In any case, it was a very appropriate approach for one of the greatest players to establish his legacy at Atleti.
