Dortmund is in talks with Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen about a January move

Ian Maatsen, a defender for Chelsea, is said to have talked with Borussia Dortmund about a January move.

Maatsen, who is 21 years old, had a great loan season at Burnley last year, but he has had trouble getting playing time since coming back to Chelsea.

Even though the Blues have a lot of injuries right now, Maatsen has only played one Premier League game, and his contract ends in 18 months.

The Evening Standard says that the Dutchman, who has recently been on loan at Charlton and Coventry, has talked with Dortmund about a possible move away from Chelsea.

According to the story, Chelsea are willing to sell Maatsen but want around £30 million because they turned down a similar offer from Burnley in the summer.

Dortmund can’t afford that, though, so they’d rather bring in the left-sided defender, who can also play further forward, on loan at first.

Maatsen has come off the bench 11 times in the Premier League this season, but Pochettino has often gone with center back Levi Colwill and right back Malo Gusto, even though first-choice left backs Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella have been hurt.

Because he can play a lot of different positions, Maatsen is one of Chelsea’s best players to sell before they can buy in January. This is because Chelsea is limited by FFP rules and needs to sell players before they can buy.

The story also says that the Blues want to get a new striker and have their eyes on both Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney. However, any deal would probably cost a lot of money.

There is a chance, though, that if one of those players becomes available, Maatsen could leave faster and Chelsea would lower their asking price. Maatsen has played 16 times for Chelsea since moving there from PSV in 2018. He has also played 13 times for the Netherlands Under-21 team.

This weekend, Chelsea plays Preston in the FA Cup. Next Tuesday, they play Middlesbrough in the first game of the EFL Cup semi-final. On January 13, they play Fulham in the Premier League again.
