For the first time, Djordje Petrovic speaks out about his No. 1 duel with Robert Sanchez, calling it a ‘dream’ for Chelsea

Being a regular starter for Chelsea is a dream come true for Djordje Petrovic, but he knows the pressures that come with it.

The Blues prevailed 3-2 away at Luton on Saturday, thanks in large part to the 24-year-old goalkeeper who kept the score close.

Since replacing the injured No. 1 Robert Sanchez, Petrovic has looked at home for Chelsea, and they’ve won four of their previous five matches in all competitions.

The Serbian international has finally spoken to English media, and he claims that playing in the Premier League has already improved his game.

“The Premier League is like a whole other sport,” he remarked. When the ball is at your feet, the pace is much faster, and there is no time to consider.

“Though it’s different, I love it here because it fulfills a dream we have for ourselves…” It’s a popular spot for players, and if you want to get better, you should come here.

By making several key saves, racing out of his box to clear long balls with his vision, and collecting corners with his 6ft 6in frame, Petrovic has made it seem easy thus far.

Despite signing Chelsea from New England Revolution for £14 million in the summer, Petrovic acknowledges he is still adjusting to the high expectations at Chelsea.

“It is not easy because we play for a big club, one of the biggest clubs in the world,” stated the player. “We want to win every game and take trophies and titles.”Despite the strain, I am very supported by my teammates, and they are there for me whenever I need them. The whole group pitches in. Everyone is getting assistance from the coaching staff.

We have great camaraderie as a team, and the goalkeepers and their coaches are doing a great job. We all help each other, and I am also helping when I have something to ask Betts [Marcus Bettinelli], Robert [Sanchez], or Lucas [Bergstrom].

“They told me ‘no pressure’ before my first game, meaning before Sheffield United… and I must admit, I felt that pressure. All they did was instruct me to play my game, and that was that.

Since Sanchez is expected to remain out for a few more weeks, Petrovic will keep starting in goal.

This is his opportunity to show Mauricio Pochettino that he can be the starting goalkeeper for the long haul.

Having established a solid rapport with Sanchez behind the scenes, Petrovic praised the friendly rivalry between Chelsea’s goalkeepers.

According to him, all he can do is focus on the upcoming game and do his best to assist the squad.

The coach has the final sаy, not me. End of story. All that matters is that we have chemistry and push each other.

Although Chelsea’s brilliance was on display in their 3-0 away win against Luton, the frazzled way they wrapped up the match demonstrated how susceptible their youthful team can be.

A better 2024 and a run at European qualification in the second half of the season are within Chelsea’s reach now that they’ve won two games in a row for the first time since October.

“It was good to get two wins and finally an away win,” Petrovic added. “We must bear in mind that our upcoming FA Cup match against Preston is crucial, and then we face Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

“We have a tough schedule but we now have a good streak and move on.”
