The locker room is “full of sadness,” according to Steven Gerrard, as Jordan Henderson continues to experience disappointment.

After Al-Ettifaq’s 1-1 draw with Al-Ittihad over the weekend, Liverpool great Steven Gerrard said that his boys were “full of sadness” on the field.

After a run of games with crowds below 700, Al-Ettifaq—whose roster includes Gini Wijnaldum and Jordan Henderson, two former Liverpool midfielders—drew 12,300 spectators for their match against the current Saudi Pro League winners. As a result, Gerrard’s team took home another point, bringing their unbeaten streak to four games with a draw in their most recent outing. Just before halftime, Wijnaldum scored his fifth goal of the season by racing on to a rebound and putting the game away.Former Reds midfielder Fabinho was in the ring with Wijnaldum and Henderson. Since moving to Saudi Arabia this summer, the trio hadn’t played together on a field before.Fabinho was a constant problem for Gerrard, Henderson, and Wijnaldum; he set up Al-Ittihad’s equalizer through Abderrazak Hamdallah nine minutes into halftime.

“The dressing room was full of sadness on my players faces because of the draw,” said Gerrard. We were hoping for a different outcome. The three points were within reach.

Truthfully, no player deserves to be benched. That’s why we rested our starters for this game.

Gerrard has managed Al-Ettifaq to six victories in fourteen league games since taking over the team. His side is still 15 points behind Al-Hilal for first place in the Saudi Pro League, but Al Ittihad moved up to fourth place, passing Al-Taawoun on goal differential.
